School principal facing sexual conduct charge

The administrator and principal of Munising Baptist Church and School has been arrested after allegations of sexual activity with a student. Last week, 35-year-old Benjamin David Franklin II was arraigned in Alger County District Court on one charge of criminal sexual conduct, third degree.

Franklin was allegedly involved with a female student between the ages of 16 and 18 years old. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

School officials learned about the incident on March 12, and Franklin's resignation was accepted immediately by the school board. They notified families on March 14 that Franklin had resigned, and on March 24, they told families that a police investigation was underway.

On Monday morning, Pastor Jason LaFlamme released this statement to TV6 and FOX UP on behalf of the church:

"It was brought to our attention that Ben was involved in an inappropriate relationship with one of our high school students. We immediately demanded his resignation and removed him from all contact with other students. We are fully cooperating with the authorities as they conduct their investigation, and we have no further comment to make at this time."

Franklin was never jailed and was released on a $5,000 bond immediately after his arraignment.

He will be back in court for a preliminary examination on May 9.
