Semi truck tips over on Mackinac Bridge, saved by guardrail

The Mackinac Bridge was closed for three hours on Thursday after a semi tractor trailer went off the bridge roadway, coming to rest on the guardrail.

On Thursday evening the truck, shown in the picture, was blown over by a large gust of wind, according to the Michigan State Police. The 49-year-old driver from Hastings was trapped in the vehicle after the crash, but he was extricated by officers at the scene. He was not injured in the incident.

The National Weather Service reported high winds gusting up to 79 miles an hour in the Straits of Mackinac at the time of the crash. The bridge has since reopened to traffic.
