The Torchlight Trek was held Thursday evening, giving younger skiers a chance to ski in downtown Ishpeming. Mild temperatures made the 14th annual trek a crowd favorite with nearly 100 young skiers participating this year. The event is noncompetitive and acts as a free skiing course aimed at introducing youth to the activity. It also unofficially kicks off the Noquemanon festivities.
"The Torchlight Trek, we wanted to keep it going and we brought it to downtown Ishpeming just to kind of keep the heritage of skiing alive in Ishpeming and make a fun event for kids to partake in," said organizer, Bob Hendrickson.
The Ishpeming Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame sponsored the event. After the kids were done skiing, they warmed up with hot chocolate and hotdogs. The Junior Noquemanon race is competitive and is scheduled to start Friday at 4 p.m. at the Noquemanon Forestville trailhead.
