Snowmobiler dies in New Year's Eve crash

Forty-five-year-old Jeffrey Dusseault of Marquette was the victim of a fatal snowmobile accident late Tuesday night in West Branch Township.

The Marquette County Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash that happened at approximately 11 p.m. near the intersection of Heidtman Road and County Road 545 North.

The snowmobile had been traveling west on Heidtman Road, which ended at County Road 545 North, when Dusseault failed to stop at the intersection and failed to negotiate the turn onto the county road. The machine crossed both lanes of the county road and struck a snow bank on the west side of the road, sending Dusseault and the snowmobile airborne. The machine struck a tree as it landed. Dusseault was knocked off the snowmobile and landed by the machine.

Dusseault had been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash scene and victim were located by family members when they went looking for him after he didn't arrive at his destination as expected.

The Marquette County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Skandia West Branch First Responder and Fire, Chocolay Township Police Department, and Marquette General EMS.

Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash which is still under investigation.
