Even the rain couldn't keep Bewabic State Park in Crystal Falls from hosting their 3rd annual Kids Fishing Derby to coincide with the DNR's free fishing weekend. The fishing derby offered casting accuracy and distance competitions as well as a fishing tournament for children under 15 years old. Park officers say the derby is a good event that they can put on for families.
"Since we're so close to the Wisconsin border here at the park it invites families to come up and fish with the children," Park Officer James Peace said. "At the same time the kids get some prizes and they get a chance to try their hand out not just at pan fishing but also casting and at accuracy as well."
Winners in each age group in each competition took home prizes and gift bags. Officers say they will continue the derby next year with hopefully better weather.
