The city of Marquette celebrated the completion of the restoration of the Father Marquette statue Monday with a special ceremony. Performances from the City Band, Lake Superior Theatre and a recreation of Father Marquette landing on the Lake Superior shore were all part of the ceremony. The statue restoration was initiated by the beautification committee at a cost of $12,000. To them, the statue represents an important figure in the history of the area.
"We have really just hoped to bring the legacy of the man for whom our city is named back to the residents," said Barb Kelly of the Marquette Beautification Committee. "I hope they're prouder of their city and prouder of the city's namesake and have some idea who Father Marquette was and what his legacy is today."
A number of groups came together to host the event, including the Marquette Regional History Center, Marquette Beautification Committee along with City Commissioners.
