Staying safe where pedestrians and vehicles meet

With US-41 in between student destinations on the Michigan Tech campus, it's important for both students and drivers to always pay attention.

Michigan state law says pedestrians do have the right-of-way when they're in the crosswalk, but before a pedestrian gets to the crosswalk, vehicles have the right-of-way.

"Drivers don't always see pedestrians, so it's a good practice to assume that you're invisible and make sure that the vehicles that are coming, either if they're going to stop, that they actually do stop and they're not just slowing down before you enter the crosswalk," said MTU Public Safety Director and Chief Dan Bennett.

Campus officials also suggest both drivers and students should always be aware and to always pay attention to your surroundings at all times.
