Elementary school students in Munising had a chance to show off their spelling skills today. The Mather Elementary school hosted a spelling bee for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Preliminary competitions were held to narrow each grade down to the final 10 spellers.
The spelling bee was open to the public and was sponsored by the Friends of Mather parent organization.
"We're very pleased with the spelling bee," Principal Dee Jay Paquette said. "A lot of times schools do a lot to promote the athletic side of it and this is definitely an academic achievement that we were trying to accomplish here.
The top three finishers in each grade took home awards and prizes.
