Two people allegedly involved in a high-speed chase in Mackinac County were arraigned in court on Friday.
Eighteen-year-old Levi Hamilton and 17-year-old Vance Demorest were in court on Friday. Hamilton and Demorest are being charged with attempting to flee or elude police and possession of a stolen vehicle. Both of these crimes are five year felonies.
Hamilton is also facing four other charges, including contributing to the delinquency of a minor, gas theft, reckless driving and a license plate violation. Demorest is also facing two misdemeanor charges.
According to the Mackinac County Sheriff's Department, authorities were called to the scene of gas theft from a Naubinway gas station at around 8 a.m. on Thursday morning. Police stopped the vehicle in Gould City, but the suspects began to flee from police, leading to a chase in excess of 100 miles an hour.
Police say that the vehicle crashed at an intersection. The sheriff's department reports that one deputy secured Hamilton, while Demorest and a 16-year-old passenger fled from the scene. K-9 units were called in along with additional officers, and the two suspects were taken into custody shortly after.
The second passenger involved in the incident was turned over to juvenile authorities. Both Hamilton and Demorest are being held in the Mackinac County Jail on $20,000 bonds.
