Swimmers train for annual Swim Teal Lake event

Swimmers are getting ready for the annual Swim Teal Lake Benefit for Diabetes next Saturday.

The event raises money for the Upper Peninsula Diabetes Outreach Network, or UPDON. Swimmers compete in two different heats swimming from the Negaunee side of Teal Lake and ending more than two miles away on the Ishpeming side.

Last year the event raised about $15,000.

"I love to swim, when my heads under water it's absolute peace, I can't think about anything, it's a great place to be," says Teal Lake swimmer Erika Hefke. "This in particular, being a fundraiser for UPDON, it's really making a difference in our community so it's kind of combining two things I love."

This will be the 11th year for the Teal Lake swim. Over the years they've raised more than $80,000 for UPDON.
