There is fresh meat for the Dead River Derby. The roller derby team held an event called "Talk Derby to Me" Saturday afternoon at Lakeview Arena in Marquette.
It was a chance for women interested in the full-contact sport to try it out. Kristin Collins from Negaunee put on some gear, skated around the track, and signed up to volunteer.
"It was way neater than I thought it was going to be, and I kind of surprised myself a little bit," said Collins.
She really enjoyed the atmosphere of Saturday's event.
"Well, the camaraderie you can already tell," she said. "I mean, I don't even know any of these ladies, and it was very inviting from the second I walked. And they're available to talk about what I was nervous about."
Collins said she was a little worried about putting on the roller skates. Now she plans to get involved in roller derby, starting with a weekly program called "fresh meat training."
The group, which was formed last year, has several training programs throughout the year. They are always in need of volunteers, and guys can help out, too.
