This years YMCA Teal Lake Triathlon originally scheduled for this Saturday has been officially cancelled. The cancellation is mostly due to a lack of registration and for safety concerns because of a lack of volunteers. Organizers say they had 30 people signed up and 19 volunteers when they needed at least 50 of both to run the race safely. The course that the bikers take needs volunteers to mark the path and slow traffic if needed so the YMCA decided it was not safe. This would have been the sixth year of the triathlon.
"We're really disappointed that we we're no longer able to hold the event," CEO of The YMCA of Marquette County Lisa Coombs-Gerou said. "We did issue refunds and credits to everyone that did sign up to the event and we appreciate those folks that did volunteer and hopefully we can pull it off again next year."
Organizers say the recent cold weather was also a factor in low registration. They are optimistic that the triathlon will return with strong numbers next year.
