Teen sent to hospital after speeding through Watersmeet at 144 miles per hour

An 18-year-old man is in the hospital after police said he was traveling 144 miles per hour through Watersmeet.

The driver lost control of his vehicle and ran into a ditch on the west side of US-45 on Thursday.

The Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Police said at approximately 7:28 Thursday evening, officers tried to stop a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on US-45 south of Watersmeet.

Radar showed the driver traveling more than 80 miles per hour, according to police.

The vehicle did not stop for officers as they continued to travel north on US-45.

Police said a backup patrol vehicle assisted in the chase and radar showed the suspect's vehicle going 144 miles per hour as it sped through the US-2 intersection in Watersmeet.

The vehicle continued north on US-45 for approximately 100 yards when the suspect lost control of his vehicle.

He was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Police said the man is in fair condition.

Police are not releasing any further information on the driver or whether or not he will be charged with a crime.
