      Terminally ill suspect in domestic assault, fire has died

      Police responded to a domestic assault and fire involving a suicidal man on Friday evening at 930 Summit Street in Hancock.

      According to police, the girlfriend of the suspect was located outside the residence with a head injury. She advised police that her 50-year-old boyfriend, who is terminally ill, was inside the home and "not acting in his normal state of mind." She told police that she had taken a gun away from the man, but he had several other guns inside the home.

      Hancock and Houghton police officers entered the home with the use of a ballistic shield and discovered a fire in the home. Police report that the suspect was on the floor next to the fire. They were able to drag the suspect from the home.

      The man and woman involved were taken to Portage Health to be treated for injuries. According to the Hancock City Police, the man died Friday evening at the hospital, though the exact reason is unknown. A Houghton police officer was also treated for smoke inhalation. The fire was extinguished by the Hancock Police Department.

      Police are still investigating this incident and no names are being released at this time.
