      Too good to be true?

The Marquette City Police are investigating a scam that stole thousands of dollars from an elderly resident.

Police report that the 89-year-old woman was told she had won a vehicle and $2.5 million. To claim the prize, the scammer informed the woman that the federal taxes needed to be paid upfront. She mailed payments out to two addresses, one in New York, the other in Florida.

Police and postal workers were able to recover one of the payments. It contained $20,000. However, the second package, with $30,000, had already been delivered. The case has now been turned over to the Office of the United States Postal Inspectors.

The Marquette City Police wish to remind all residents that these telephone scams continue and that you or someone you know could fall victim.
