      Trial in death of Ojibway Correctional Facility inmate underway

      A murder trial began Wednesday in Gogebic County.

      Michael David Smith is accused of beating an inmate at the Ojibway Correctional Facility in Marinesco on January 11, 2013.

      Inmate Randolph Connor was found in the prison TV room, severely beaten. He later died at Marquette General Hospital from a fatal brain injury.

      Smith and another inmate, Delorean Earnest Henderson, were arrested on June 4, 2013. Both were charged with one count homicide-murder second degree, manslaughter, and being a habitual offender.

      Henderson pled guilty to manslaughter and second degree habitual offender. His sentencing is set for April 15, 2014. He is expected to testify during Smith's trial.

      The trial is expected to run at least six days.
