A 29-year-old Chicago man is heading to prison after being sentenced in Alger County Circuit Court Wednesday. Israel Velez and three other men broke into a Munising Township home last February, held the owner at gunpoint, and then robbed him. Valez agreed to a no contest plea and was sentenced to 25 to 60 years in prison.
"There's been countless lies; everybody's got a different story here. Everybody. I'm the only one who hasn't said my story. Why? Because it don't make no difference. I'm still guilty. At the end of the day, it's not gonna change the law," explained Velez to the judge.
Velez pled guilty to armed robbery, home invasion, and unlawful imprisonment. He will also have to pay more than $1,000 in court costs. Also connected to this case, Isaac Cotto, the last of the four men in the same Munising home invasion, plead no contest plea in court Wednesday. Cotto was scheduled for trial but waived it for Wednesday's no contest plea.
That means three of the four men involved in the case have been found guilty. Cotto will be sentenced February 20. As for the other two men involved, Ruben Rodriguez was found guilty after trial and will be sentenced next month. George Carmona pled guilty and was sentenced to a minimum of 11 years in prison.
