U.P. Veteran of the Year named at fair

The 2014 Upper Peninsula Veteran of the Year was announced Thursday at the State Fair in Escanaba.

Jim Edberg of Felch was honored and presented with the title. The recognition ceremony falls on Honored Citizen Day at the fair every year, where active and retired military and veterans receive free admission. Edberg was selected Veteran of the Year by a committee of past U.P. commanders for his dedication to community service. He often sings and plays guitar at the VA Hospital in Iron Mountain.

"A day that I'll remember all my life, but also, just to be with the other veterans," says Edberg. "I'm only one veteran; there are many veterans here that are as deserving and whenever I get a chance to be in the company of other veterans, it's a special place to be.

Edberg says he plans on celebrating by riding to Tennessee on motorcycles with his wife.
