Divers have retrieved a wooden beam that could belong to LaSalle's lost ship, the Griffin.
The 20 foot beam was discovered Wednesday off the coast of Poverty Island in northern Lake Michigan. Shipwreck expert and longtime Griffin enthusiast, Steve Libert, and his dive team have searched the waters near Poverty Island for more than a week.
The Michigan DNR Historical Center in Lansing says the state owns shipwrecks embedded in the Great Lakes. Libert disputes that claim.
The beam will be on loan to the expedition team for 30 days to determine its age and origination.
