Upper Michigan hospital begins $5.4 million construction project

Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital is beginning construction on a new 18,000 square foot multi-service health care clinic in Houghton.

The $5.4 million project will be located behind the Wal-Mart in Houghton, and it will house 19 exam rooms. Aspirus plans to expand its women's health program through the facility and allow women to have testing done in one location.

Construction began this week and is expected to be completed by May of next year. The hospital says they are looking forward to being able to provide a variety of services in one location in Houghton.

"It shows that we're here to stay, we're growing, and we're very much interested in providing for the needs of the community and the patients that we serve down here," said Aspirus Keweenaw Medical Director Jerry Luoma.

An official groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 23.
