Three students from the Upper Peninsula are winners of the statewide America & Me essay contest.
The children wrote an essay honoring their personal Michigan hero. There were ten winners in total that competed against over 5,000 students from 450 junior high schools and middle schools.
Escanaba's own Sarah Anderson from Holy Name Catholic School in Escanaba won second place overall. She wrote about her 90-year-old grandfather.
"I just know that he has accomplished so much and I wanted him to be recognized," said eighth grader Sarah Anderson.
The other two U.P. winners are Daniel Farnsworth of the Bark River-Harris School and Ellie Raffaele of Sault Area Middle School. Winners were chosen by a panel of judges.
They will receive a cash award of $1,000, a plaque and a medallion. They will also go to Lansing in May to visit the state capitol, see a Lugnuts baseball game, and attend an awards banquet aboard a riverboat cruise.
