Upper Peninsula unemployment grows in October

Unemployment numbers have been released for October, and the number is up for the Upper Peninsula.

According to the report, Upper Michigan has an unemployment increase of 1.6 percent over last October, with a gain of .6 percent over September of this year. Only one county, Keweenaw, dropped in unemployment over October 2013.

Mackinac County came in with the lowest numbers in the Upper Peninsula, with 5.9 percent unemployment, while Baraga County continued to be the highest at 16 percent.

The survey cited job cuts in the hotel, restaurant, recreational service, and construction sectors as a reason for the increase in unemployment numbers across Upper Michigan.
