UPSIDER: Daniel J. Paul of Gladstone

Dan has been volunteering for many years. About seven to eight years ago, he started a middle school cross country team in Gladstone which he is still very involved with.

After cross country was done, he started a winter sports club in which snowshoeing and cross country skiing were introduced to interested students.

In the Spring, a 4th, 5th, and 6th grade track team began. (Seventh and 8th graders had a school-sponsored program.) Again, he is still involved with these activities. He recruited others to help him with these endeavors. This spring, they have over 100 students in the track program. These activities encouraged other local communities to sponsor like groups to allow competition. The first year of the track program only involved two schools: Gladstone and West Iron County. Now Escanaba Holy Name, Manistique Catholic School, and I believe Bark River have teams which compete. The snowshoe club participates in races in Wisconsin and started a local race.He also volunteers in the community in many activities: Knights of Columbus, St.Vincent de Paul Society, Community Soup Suppers. He organizes several road races to raise money for local organizations: The Great Pumpkin Chase, Turkey Trot, Santa's Bougie, New Year's Resolution Run.

He helps other organizers with their races: Salvation Home Town Run, Veteran's Park Race, Chilly Chase, Gladstone Kiwanis Fourth of July Race. He is a regional rep for the Upper Peninsula Road Runner Club.
