Detroit will host a commissioning ceremony for the sixth warship named after the city.
The Navy League announced Friday that the USS Detroit will be formally commissioned on the Detroit River downtown in the spring of 2016.
The Littoral Combat Ship is under construction in Marinette, Wisconsin.
This fall, the vessel will be christened USS Detroit when U.S. Sen. Carl Levin's wife, Barbara, breaks the traditional bottle of champagne over the ship's bow to launch it into the Menominee River.
The ship's maiden voyage will be in the spring of 2016 when it sails to Detroit for the commissioning event.
Following commissioning, the USS Detroit will head to its home port of San Diego. It will have a core crew of 50 Navy men and women.
