A popular Memorial Day weekend getaway location Van Riper State Park officially opened Friday, a month behind schedule due to the long winter.
As a result, the park is starting behind in rentals and visitors. It wasn't until last week that all the snow melted from campsites and pipes were thawed.
Summer employees have been working on cleaning up pine debris, trimming trees and making sure everything is good to go. Bookings though, are already filling up for holiday weekend.
"Memorial Weekend has always been the kick off week for camping in the U.P. Currently all of our reservable sites are taken," said State Park Ranger Michael Knack. "We do have a number of local sale sites and walk in sites that are still available, and there are camping opportunities at the state forest campgrounds as well."
Sites are filling up fast for up-coming festivals and events. Park officials encourage you to make reservations soon, rather than later.
