Preparations continue for the annual Noquemanon Ski Marathon. Wednesday, volunteers from Northern Michigan University did their part to help. Students helped make up bags for the skiers that contain information, a few snacks and race instructions.
With school closed at NMU Wednesday, a team of student volunteers that normally helps was not available. Noque organizers had to send out a call for help through the dorms and teachers. With a record number of racers this year, volunteers had their work cut out for them.
"Currently we have about 1,442 racers all signed up for the ski race which is a new record this year," said Expo Chairman John Wells. "We got a lot of work to do, but it's great that they're here to do that, and I heard many students comment, 'I didn't really have much to do anyway today because it was so cold and classes were cancelled,' but we really appreciate their help."
Volunteers stayed until all 1,500 bags were made for the race participants. The Noque Expo is scheduled for Friday from 5-9 p.m. at the Superior Dome.
