Voters say Baraga County Courthouse stays put

Voters in Baraga County have rejected a plan to move the county courthouse to the former Baraga Memorial Hospital.

Despite efforts to relocate the courthouse, residents overwhelmingly voted against the proposed 1.5 mills over 20 years. Out of 1,400 votes, more than 900 were against the move. A century old building houses the county courthouse. Economic hardships may have been a factor in the decision.

"I can't say I was terribly surprised. Baraga County has the highest unemployment rate in the State of Michigan. Things have been very bad here for a long time, and I think people just are not willing to approve a new tax, even for a project as worthwhile as this," said Baraga County Prosecutor, Joseph O'Leary.

Currently there are no plans for the future of the courthouse or for the former Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
