Weekend tutoring helps students aim higher

Young students needing homework help in the Republic area are in luck.

The Republic-Michigamme Homework Club aims to improve the grades of local students. Parents and members of the community volunteer their time at the Oasis in South Republic. They invite more elementary and middle school students to join them for help in any subject.

The students that attend regularly said their grades have greatly improved.

"When we're done doing our homework, we get to do spare stuff--we go on the computer, we play ping pong," said fifth graders Rachel, Nikki and Lexie.

The homework club is open at the Oasis on Sundays from 3 until 5 p.m. For more information, call the founder of the club, Carol Nicholas, at (906) 376-8233 or Tammy Kaminen at 376-8060.
