"It's not always easy to book flights out of the U.P., and we've been doing it so long that we kind of know the ins and outs of what to look for to get people the best deal," said Laura Chapman, owner of Holiday Travel Vacations in Marquette.

"Be prepared. It is a holiday. It's a busy time of year. It usually breaks records every year, and so you want to plan for that," said Duane Duray, airport manager.
When it comes to Christmas travelers, KAYAK said try departing as close to the 25th as possible because last year this saved travelers more than 20 percent on average. The travel group also said try to avoid departing and returning during the weekends surrounding Christmas. Those fares were up to 24 percent above average.
