The race is on, and Thursday was the first day to buy tickets and place bets for the Bark River Lions Off Road Icebreaker Truck Contest.
The former sportsman's race truck will be placed on the ice on Little Bay de Noc in Escanaba in about a week.
For now the truck is attracting attention at Riverside Chevrolet. The idea is to buy a ticket for two dollars and place a bet on the month, day, hour, and minute that the truck will fall through the ice.
"Just a great location," said fundraiser chairperson Toby Kuivinen. "The ice seems to last longer than anywhere else in the bay. No racing with this one, though. We tried to get a pro. We think we have one for next year, but this truck is not going to race, it's just a show truck."
The proceeds will benefit local Upper Peninsula charities. The lucky winner will get 50 percent of the total purse, plus a set of four Firestone tires from Mr. Tire, as well as two passes to the off-road races.
