Winter weather causes slippery roads and whiteout conditions in Marquette County

Two vehicles in the eastbound lane of US-41 were facing the opposite direction of traffic after landing in snow banks in Negaunee Township on Sunday.

To avoid hitting one of the vehicles, one driver said he also ended up in the snow bank.

Police said slippery roads and low visibility led to the incident, and no injuries were reported.

Northwesterly winds were blowing around 23 miles per hour in Marquette which made visibility in some areas less than a quarter mile. The temperature ranged from 15 to 20 degrees, but with the high winds, it felt 14 degrees colder.

According to the National Weather Service, Marquette was under a lake effect snow warning until 1 a.m. with 4 to 10 inches of snow expected through the evening near Lake Superior and over eastern Marquette County near the Alger County border.
