A beautiful spring morning is something that would put a smile on any Midwesternerâ??s face. But in Land Oâ?? Lakes, Karen Weber-Mendham is smiling about something entirely different.
Cheesy garlic bread.
Karen participated in the "Do us a Flavor" contest sponsored by Lays and submitted her idea.
But with over 3.8 million flavor submissions, things didn't look too promising.
â??I don't enter contests, ever,â?? explained Weber-Mendham. â??I don't buy lottery tickets; I don't enter contests, because everybody thinks this: nobody really wins. You know someone wins, but it's not going to be you.â??
Thatâ??s what Karen thought, until she received a phone call saying she had won the contest and a million dollars.
â??Monday morning we were on Good Morning America, and then the big reveal was actually Tuesday morning at the New York Stock Exchange,â?? Karen said.
Itâ??s been a whirlwind of excitement, but she says when it comes to the winnings, she's staying practical.
â??Three kids, college, braces for two of them. Iâ??m looking for Rosie the Robot from the Jetsonâ??s to cook and clean!â?? Karen added.
She says most people she's met have no idea where Land O' Lakes is located.
â??Itâ??s a good day if they know where Wisconsin is, quite frankly, but we like it that way up here,â?? she said.
Lays will be manufacturing the chips throughout the rest of the year.
