Wolf hunt opposition to submit petition signatures for ballot issue

A group that opposes hunting wolves in Michigan says it has enough petition signatures to force a second referendum during the November election.

Keep Wolves Protected says it will submit the petitions to the secretary of state's office Thursday in Lansing.

If the signatures are validated and the referendum is approved, the ballot will have at least two and possibly three wolf-related issues.

The protection group already got enough signatures to require a vote on repealing a 2012 law designating the wolf as a game animal.

The Legislature responded by empowering the Natural Resources Commission to put animals on the game species list. The latest petition seeks to overturn that measure as well.

Another group is gathering signatures to continue wolf hunting in the state, which began last fall.
