The YMCA in Marquette is hoping to teach every third grader in the county how to swim with the Superior Splash.
The YMCA is working with schools and other groups in Marquette County to host free lessons for the kids. During the lessons, kids will learn more than just how to swim, they'll also learn about lifejacket use, rescue techniques and beach front safety.
Organizers say this is a crucial age for kids.
"There's a lot of evidence that shows that if a child hasn't been introduced to a swim lesson by third grade then they're never going to take one in their life and so we want to make sure every child in this county has a chance to at least have an introduction to a swim lesson and some water safety skills," said Matt Williams, YMCA aquatic director.
The Superior Splash is set over three days April 21 through 23. Locations include the YMCA in Marquette, Northern Michigan University, Westwood High School and the Marquette Senior High School.
