The Negaunee YMCA will officially reopen for business on Wednesday in a new spot. Itâ??s almost twice the size, with brand new gym equipment like treadmills, ellipticals, and free weights. The YMCA has taken over the former Range Bank building on Iron Street.
â??Everyoneâ??s reaction so far that has seen the space has gone â??Wow, this is so much better.â?? I thought we had a nice facility before but itâ??s nothing compared to this.â?? said Rachael Berglund, the West End leader.
Aside from the gym on the main floor with all new equipment, the YMCA also features a sauna, locker rooms, meeting rooms, and a climbing wall. A daycare center will also be available for children.
â??Get them used to coming to the gym with their parents and introduce them to a healthy lifestyle,â?? said Kelsey Roy, the Youth and Family Program Coordinator.
The renovations will help the YMCA appeal to people who want the extra features of a big gym membership but may not be able to afford it.
â??Not only are you supporting a local business but youâ??re supporting the community,â?? Berglund said. â??Weâ??re a nonprofit organization so we donâ??t turn anybody away due to financial inability to pay.â??
So far the renovation has cost upwards of $1.25 million, most of that coming has come from donations. If youâ??d like to contribute to the YMCA of Negaunee, you can do so through the Capital Campaign. Donations can also give you naming rights to certain parts of the new building.
