      'Yooper' added to Merriam-Webster dictionary

A familiar word will finally be showing up in the Merriam-Webster dictionary after a 10-year campaign.

It was announced Monday that "Yooper" will now be appearing editions of the dictionary. The campaign, headed by Steve Parks, has taken 10 years to complete. As part of the process, Merriam-Webster officials needed to verify that the word wasn't just a local term.

The word, defined as a native or resident of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, will appear starting in the 2014 edition of the popular dictionary, according to Merriam-Webster officials.

There will be an official celebration in August with one representative from Merriam-Webster planning to attend and get a first-hand look at what it means to be a Yooper.
