Young ORV riders learn the ropes

Young ORV riders spent their Sunday at the Thunder Bowl near Manistique.

The Big Kids ORV Excursion is a two-day safety course for less experienced riders. The event focused on kids age 12 to 15, but there were some from all ages participating. Riders learned the basics and more important lessons, like what to do in an emergency or when stuck. The Thunder Bowl area offered plenty of challenging terrain for the kids to learn.

"It's really fun and you can do a lot of stuff, but sometimes it's kind of hard and you can't really do it because of the sand," said 12-year-old Amara Dwight from Eben Junction.

"Today has been a lot of fun. It's making me feel a lot safer riding four-wheelers now," said 11-year-old Ian Valentine from Escanaba.

The Big Kids ORV Excursion is a new event. It was put together by several organizations working together. It is planned to become an annual event.
