A L'Anse man was one of four soldiers killed in Afghanistan over the weekend.
Private First Class Robert Voakes Jr., 21, died when his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device Saturday, June 4.
Tuesday flags were flying at half-staff outside of Baraga High School where Voakes graduated in 2009.
People throughout the community described him as a well-liked young man.
"When the word got out yesterday, the town was a buzz," Peter Margaraggia, a former employer of Voakes. "Everyone was talking about it. It's just a terrible loss for the community. He was a really nice kid, respected, polite. In this day and age, you can't say that about all of them, but he was a really nice kid."
His remains were returned to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Monday.
Arrangements are being handled by the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel in L'Anse.
