Recall petitions approved for Ishpeming City Council members

Petitions to recall three Ishpeming City Council members are now circulating.

This comes after the Marquette County Elections Commission approved the ballot wording as understandable for the public on Wednesday morning.

The three council members up for recall are Claudia Demarest, Elaine Racine and Michael Tall. The Ishpeming Citizens for Bjorne Justice Committee cites the firing of Ishpeming's Police Chief Jim Bjorne as their reason.

Bjorne was fired by the Ishpeming City Manager in September for insubordination.

The Ishpeming City Council denied Bjorne a transfer of service that would have allowed him to retire.

"We have all the confidence in the world that we'll collect enough signatures we have heard from many residents of the city who are willing to circulate the petitions and sign them," said petition spokesperson Robert Clark.

If enough valid signatures are collected over the next three months, the recall election will happen in May.
