HOUGHTON, Mich. â?? The Michigan Tech soccer team began defense of its 2012 GLIAC title with a 1-0 victory over Lake Erie tonight in both teams' GLIAC opener. The 3-2-0 Huskies posted their third shutout of the season.After a scoreless first half that saw the Huskies hold a 10-2 advantage in shots and 6-2 margin in shots on target, Tech finally broke through in the 60th minute. Lindsey Van Rooy beat her defender, forcing the goalkeeper to come play the ball. Van Rooy fed a nice pass to Katie Boardman, who tapped it in for her second goal of the season."It was a beautiful goal," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "We've been working on creating those opportunities and Katie finished it tonight."The game had its share of physical play, with the teams combining for 21 fouls (11 by Tech). The Black and Gold finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots.Jenna Phelps (1-1-0) earned her first victory of the season in goal for the Huskies, making four saves."I'm happy to come away with a win. It was a hard fought battle. Lake Erie has improved considerably, and they caused us some problems. We were able to keep our composure."Michigan Tech will step back out of conference with a trip to UW-Green Bay on Sunday (Sept. 22). Kick off is set for 1 p.m. (ET).
