Marquette topped the battle of the Blues, as they captured the Mid-Peninsula league championship 8-5 over defending champion Kingsford.
Trevor Bratoniaâ??s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning gave Marquette an insurance run, as Levi Underwood scored to put Marquette up 8-4.
â??We come here and win this, and I think weâ??re just going to keep rolling,â?? Bratonia said.
From there, McKinley Larson closed out the game for Marquette on the mound. He allowed one run in the final two innings.
â??It definitely feels good to get a winâ?| to win the league and then go into the tournament,â?? Larson said.
It was Marquetteâ??s offense early in the second inning that put them up 5-0.
Sam Leow doubled, that scored Ryan Hanson and McKinley Larson. Ryan Walther followed up with another double, that drove in Leow and Bratonia. In the blink of an eye, the Blues of Marquette led 4-0.
Kingsford, though, responded by scoring four runs in four innings.
Dan Harringtonâ??s single down the left field line in the fourth inning brought home Cole Tengesdahl and Cole Michaud as Kingsford inched closer.
However, Marquetteâ??s defense was able to keep Kingsford at bay.
â??Any time that you can play a good Kingsford team and come out on top, the boys did a good job,â?? Marquette manager Derek Swajanen said.
With the victory, Marquette also captured the regular season championship.
