Marquette Old Timers Hockey Tournament a success

MARQUETTE -- Put on your hockey skates. This weekend, the fifth annual Marquette Old Timers Hockey Tournament took place inside the Berry Events Center and Lakeview Arena. Around 44 teams and 600 players were broken up into six divisions: women's, novice, open, 30 and older, 40 and older, and 50 and older.Games were played all weekend long. On Sunday, all the championship games within each division were played. One of the premiere games of the day was in the 30 and older division, which featured a rematch between Canale Tonella and Sager Inc. Tournament directors Kevin Thomsen and Ryan Riipi played for Canale and Sager, respectively. Even though it was tied 1-1 early in the first period, Canale scored the last four goals to win 5-1 over Sager Inc.

"It's hard on Sunday football to get a really good turnout, but it's mostly a big reunion down here," said Thomsen. "You got a lot of old people that grew up at this rink [and] other hockey people that are coming down just to say hi."

The tournament hopes to be bigger and better next season.

"It's Marquette, we love hockey here," Thomsen said. "It's a great start to the season."
