The Michigan Tech volleyball team faced Minnesota Duluth, the No. 1 squad in NCAA Division II, tonight and fell by a 3-0 score. The Huskies showed some good things in the match, but the Bulldogs defended their home floor with scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-14.Statistics from the match were not available as of release time, but head coach Matt Jennings had the following things to say regarding the match."Going up against a team like Duluth presented a great opportunity for our young team. We had some excellent individual performances, but unfortunately that won't cut it. This is a team sport, and in order to rise to a challenge like tonight, we needed everyone to come along.' Kienna Sharp had a fantastic night, and hit some really nice shots that will be of great value in the GLIAC." Aubrey Ficek did not, for a second, play like a freshman tonight. She got after it, took a lot of aggressive swings, and passed as consistently all match long."Maddie (Haben) ran the court very well and played her style of game. It's just that we couldn't put the ball away for her."We have a lot to work on, injuries to recover from and some maturing to do as we enter conference play. I'm confident that we are getting better each week and are poised enough to make a move in the GLIAC starting on Friday night."UMD improved to 9-0 with tonight's win in their home opener. The Huskies are now 3-6 with their first GLIAC match set for Friday (Sept. 20) vs. Lake Superior State. Opening serve is set for 5 p.m., and the match will be broadcast live on Mix 93.5 FM.
