SOMERS, Wis. ?? The Northern Michigan University cross country team kicked off the 2013 season with a sixth place finish at the Midwest Collegiate Opener hosted by the University of Wisconsin Parkside. The Wildcats totaled 76 points as 16 teams competed at the race.
Juniors Olivia Howard (19:14.0) and Chelsea Farquhar (19:14.2) paced the Wildcats in 26th and 27th places. Junior Larissa Halonen (19:18.3) and redshirt freshman Xavier Donajkowski (19:19.5) were 31st and 32nd. Junior Christina Toogood (19:23.2) also scored for the 'Cats in 36th place.
"The team ran well against a very strong field today," NMU coach Jenny Ryan said. "Our top five runners ran within nine seconds of each other."
Junior Emily Allen (70th), senior Evelyne Ruiz (76th) and sophomore Jaylee Brown (99th) also placed in the top 100.
Edinboro (33), UW-Parkside (50), Northwestern (47), Indianapolis (64) and Winona State (55) finished ahead of Northern.
The Wildcats get back on the course next weekend (Sept. 21) for the Pre-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Meet at Michigan Tech.
