MARQUETTE, Mich. ?? After a successful week at the U.S. National Championships, the Northern Michigan University Nordic skiing team returns to action at the Telemark Distance CCSA this weekend (Jan. 18-19) in Hayward, Wis.
The Telemark Distance meet will feature all of the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) teams, making it a preview of the CCSA Championships that take place Feb. 8-9 in Ishpeming and hosted by NMU.
With strong performances at the U.S. Nationals (Jan. 3-4, 8, 10) , two Wildcats were picked to represent Team USA at the upcoming World Championships: senior Rosie Frankowski to the under-23 ski team and freshman Adam Martin to the United States Junior World Championships team. The U23 World Championships and World Junior Championships will be held Jan. 29-Feb. 3, 2014 in Val di Fiemme, Italy, site of last season's FIS Nordic Ski World Championships.
Martin and sophomore Sam Elfstrom finished first and second, respectively, in the men's junior sprint at the U.S. Nationals last Friday. Martin was the region's top finisher in the men's 15K classic race last Saturday with a time of 40:40.8.
Frankowski was sixth overall and the top collegiate finisher with a time of 1:00:10.2 in the women's 20K mass start last Wednesday (Jan. 8) while the winner of the race was NMU alumna Caitlin Gregg. NMU sophomore Mary Kate Cirelli was the second CCSA finisher crossing the finish line in 1:03:42.8 while junior Felicia Gesior was ninth in the region.
