MARQUETTE , Mich. â?? The Northern Michigan University swept its weekend at home on Sunday (Oct. 13), after defeating Saginaw Valley State University. The Wildcats took the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game 4-1. The Green and Gold improve to 4-6-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference.
NMU's first goal of the game came at 36:42 on a shot from junior Nicole Musi, her first of the season and the game. Under two minutes later (38:10), Musi got the ball from sophomore Kim Rietveld off a free kick for her second goal giving the Wildcats the 2-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, freshman Paula Hafner knocked in her sixth goal of the season at 47:00 on a shot from the middle of the box from freshman Wynona Maravilla. At 60:07, Musi tallied her third goal of the game on an unassisted shot from the left side of the net.
With seven minutes remaining in the game, the Cardinals got on the board with a shot by Olive Perrin. Her shot came from the center of the box on an unassisted play.
NMU had eight shots on the afternoon and the Cardinals had 12. NMU freshman goalkeeper Alexandra Simmons finished with six saves and SVSU's Kailey Naumcheff had three.
The Wildcats travel to Ohio for a pair of conference games this upcoming weekend, playing against Ohio Dominican on Friday (Oct. 18) and Ashland on Sunday (Oct. 20).
