TIFFIN , Ohio â?? The Northern Michigan University soccer team picked up its second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win on Friday (Oct. 4) and extended its unbeaten streak to three games with a 4-1 victory over the Tiffin Dragons. The Wildcats scored four goals in a 14-minute span early in the second half after the home team took a 1-0 lead.
NMU improves to 2-5-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the GLIAC with the win from the Paradiso Fields. The 'Cats started the unbeaten streak with a 3-0 win over Lake Erie on Sept. 22. The only game last week was a 1-1 tie at Michigan Tech.
Lauren Bowyer gave Tiffin the 1-0 lead at 18:53 off a corner kick. Giulianne Domingues tallied the assist.
Sophomore Ashley Katers tied the game at one and opened the floodgates for NMU, scoring her second of the season at 51:21. Sophomore Gabriella Garza setup Katers with a cross pass.
Five minutes later (56:36), junior Taylor Smith broke the tie with her first goal of the season. The game-winning tally was unassisted.
Freshman Paula Hafner setup the next two NMU goals to put the game out of reach for the home team. Freshman Wynona Maravilla scored her first career goal at 60:54 and then sophomore Helen Kiilunen also scored her first goal in the Green and Gold at 64:21.
Freshman goalkeeper Alexandra Simmons picked up her second win with two saves on the afternoon. Tiffin goalkeeper Hayley Coppola had 12 saves.
As a team, NMU finished with 24 shots to Tiffin's 11. Each team had four fouls.
The Wildcats wrap-up the three-game road trip with a noon game at Findlay on Sunday (Oct. 6).
