      NMU Sports Hall of Famer Dave Ghiardi dies

      A member of the NMU Sports Hall of Fame has died.

      Dave Ghiardi was a Negaunee High School graduate who played four years of basketball and helped the Miners win a regional title in 1955.

      He was captain for two seasons.

      After one season of playing baseball at Western Michigan University Ghiardi transferred back to NMU to play basketball for Stan Albeck for four seasons, earning Honorable Mention All-America and team Most Valuable Player honors as the Wildcats reached the NAIA Semifinals in Kansas City.

      He was a teacher in Dowagiac and Lake Linden-Hubbell districts for a couple years before moving to Munising.

      Ghiardi coached basketball and golf for the Mustangs for many years, then joined WQXO in Munising as a sports broadcaster when he retired in 1993...teaming with Jim Landfair on many occasions.

      Services will be this Thursday. Visitation will be at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising from 10:00 a.m. until 1:30.

      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Munising at 2:00 p.m

      Dave Ghiardi died of a long battle with cancer at the age of 75.
