HILLSDALE, Mich. ?? The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving team kicked off the 2013-14 season with a 130-75 win at Hillsdale College on Friday (Oct. 11) evening. Juniors Debbi Lawrence and Madisen Sechena each had three wins to lead the Wildcats.
"We had a great day today," NMU swimming and diving coach Heidi Voigt said. "Our veterans stepped up and showed some leadership to get the season started off on the right foot. We're excited for our meet at Grand Valley tomorrow to wrap up our first big weekend."
Lawrence won the 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke and was on the winning 200 medley relay team. Sechena took the 100 breaststroke, 200 IM and was also on the winning 200 medley relay squad.
Junior Emily Brennan had a pair of wins in the 200 and 500 freestyle. She was also on the second place 200 medley relay team. Sophomore Crystal Bennet won the 100 butterfly, was on the winning 200 medley relay team while also finishing third in the 100 breaststroke.
Junior Tara Dowling was the third swimmer in the 200 freestyle relay and finished second in the 1000 freestyle. Senior Meghan Cepala swam the second leg of the 200 freestyle relay and placed third in 50 freestyle.
Freshman Rachel Borchardt and Courtney Konopitski had very good days to kickoff their Wildcat careers. Borchardt led off in the 200 freestyle relay and finished second in 200 freestyle. Konopitski placed second in the 100 freestyle, second in the 200 medley relay and third in the 100 butterfly.
The Bourguignon sisters were second and third in 100 backstroke. Junior Emily was second and freshman Katie was third. Emily was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay while Katie was on the second place 200 medley relay squad.
NMU continues its downstate trip at Grand Valley State on Saturday (Oct. 12). The meet starts at noon from the GVSU Pool.
