MARQUETTE, Mich. â?? The Northern Michigan University volleyball team returns to Vandament Arena for its final home games of the regular season on Friday (Nov. 1) and Saturday (Nov. 2). The Wildcats weekend consists of two key Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contests as they take on the Grand Valley State Lakers (Nov. 1) and Ferris State Bulldogs (Nov. 2). The Wildcats, Lakers, and Bulldogs enter the weekend in a three-way tie at the top of the GLIAC North Division with 10-1 conference records. The Wildcats will play Grand Valley State on Friday (Nov. 1) at 7 p.m. and Ferris State for senior day on Saturday (Nov. 2) at 4 p.m. Seniors Sarah Hamilton , Kellisha Harley , Kalli Herron , Lina Lopes and Suzanne Solin will be honored before Saturday's game.
All military personnel and their families get free admission to Saturday's (Nov. 2) game. Northern Michigan University will be honoring Veteran's during the match.
The Wildcats are 17-7 overall and 10-1 in the conference after going 1-2 at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover in Aurora, Ill. NMU was defeated, 3-0 by Southern Indiana in Friday's (Oct. 25) match before splitting its matches on Saturday (Oct. 26). The Wildcats swept Missouri Science and Technology, 3-0, and then lost in five sets to Truman State.
Ferris State (17-5, 10-1 GLIAC) was 2-1 at the Crossover on the weekend, with all matches decided by shutouts. The Bulldogs took the games against Rockhurst University and Lewis University, but fell to Indianapolis.
Grand Valley (19-3, 10-1 GLIAC) enters the week after going undefeated at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover. The Lakers defeated both Truman State and Missouri S&T, 3-1, and then shut out Southern Indiana, 3-0.
Senior Lina Lopes leads the green and gold in kills with 279 on the season, senior Kalli Herron is right behind with 262. Sophomore Alex Berger leads the Wildcat defense with 279 digs and Lopes adds 242. Senior Kellisha Harley sets up the offense, recording 862 assists.
Against the Lakers the Wildcats lead the all-time series, 49-45-2. The two teams faced one another last season in Allendale, Mich., where NMU took the match in five sets. In the 2013 season the Lakers are led by Abby Aiken with 287 kills. Christina Canepa leads the Laker's defensive front with 326 digs while Aiken adds 264 and Kaitlyn Wolters has 225. Wolters contributes with 754 assists.
NMU has the 45-42 advantage over the Bulldogs. Last season, FSU took the match 3-1 on the road in Big Rapids. The Bulldogs have taken the last two matches, but NMU won the last match in Marquette, 3-2, in 2011. Ferris Sstate is led by Alexis Huntey with 250 kills and Brandie Merren with 344 digs. Stephanie Sikorski has 763 assists for the Bulldogs.
The Wildcats close the home season on Tuesday (Nov. 5) against Michigan Technological University at 7 p.m.
